Montaser Al-Sawaf

Age: 33 years old

Martyr Date: 12/01/2023

Montaser worked as a photojournalist and cameraman for the Turkish state-owned news agency Anadolu Agency.

He was wounded in his face earlier in the war but returned to documenting the devastation in Gaza City after recovering.

He was killed in airstrikes in Gaza City, according to Anadolu Agency, Middle East Monitor and the International Federation of Journalists, along with several of his brothers on December 1. Just two weeks earlier, on November 18, his father, Mustafa Al-Sawaf, a well-known journalist and veteran teacher at the Islamic University in Gaza City, was also killed.

Montaser was left to wait for an ambulance for about half an hour before being transported by private car to the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, Anadolu Agency reported. In a barely-functioning medical system, doctors were unable to treat his wounds.

His colleague, Hind Khoudary, wrote on Instagram “He was one of the few colleagues that stayed and risked his life to report on what was happening in the north. Before we evacuated, we spent three weeks in the office living together. We cried, we laughed. We were scared – we strengthened each other.”
